Dr. John Owusu-Afriyie
Dr. John Owusu-Afriyie, Programme Manager, Research and Macroeconomic
Management Department.
Dr. John Owusu-Afriyie is a Ghanaian Economist and a Social Sceince Researcher.He obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree (Economics with
Russian Language) in 2008 from the University of Ghana, Legon. In 2012, he obtained his Master of Philosophy Degree in Economics from the same
university.He also studied the Craft of Scholarly Writing at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (Geneva,
Switzerland)in 2020.In addition, he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy Degree(Ph.D)in Development Economics at the University of Ghana, in
collaboration with the United Nations University-World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER)in 2020.
Until his appointment as a Programme Manager at the Department of Research and Macroeconomic Management, WAIFEM, he had worked with the School of
Adult and Distance Education, University of Ghana, as an Economic Tutor for 8 years. He tutored Macroeconomics, Applied Statistics for Economists,
International Trade Theory and Practice, and Microeconomics at the Distance Education Unit. He had also acquired profound experience in
Economic research. Currently, he has a number of publications and working papers to his credit. His research interests are Monetary Policy
Issues,Foreign Direct Investment, Poverty and Inequality, Labour Market Outcomes and Institutions, Economic Development and Growth,
Entrepreneurship, Education and Environmental Economics. His recent publication on the topic, Effect of Chinese FDI on Economic Growth in
Africa, won him the 2018 Emerald Literati Award (Highly Commended Paper Category). In addition to these achievements, John was a researcher on
international research projects by African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), International Growth Centre (IGC)and African Centre of Excellence
for Inequality Research (ACEIR).
John is currently a member of the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and a former member of the African Econometric Society (AES).
